Tomato Season is here!

Posted on June 15th, 2020 by Sheila Dicks

Tomato season is officially here at Joy Haven Farm which means for the next couple weeks you will be getting them in your share(if their on your preferences). We have grown a variety of tomatoes this year like Persimmon (orange heirloom) , Costoluto (Italian heirloom), T.C. Jones Yellow (KY family heirloom), Super Choice (large slicing heirloom), Amish Paste, Illini Gold Paste, Principe Borghese (drying tomato), and of course our Sungold and Sakura Cherry tomatoes. We also have some other slicers that where planted a little later so should have for our Fall CSA. We love looking through the seed catalogs in December and January dreaming about what varieties we love and what we would like to try. While heirlooms are not always the heavy producers their flavor is outstanding and we love supporting the seed savers who keep these heirlooms past down. If you want to learn more about heirloom varieties order yourself a Southern Exposure Seed Exchange catalog, it is full of heirloom varieties and their history. All the varieties are very tasty eaten fresh, but they can also be frozen, canned, made into sauces or if you like could get some Principe Borghese and dry them stored in olive oil. One of my favorite things to do with cherry tomatoes is cut in half toss in olive oil and garlic and roasted. We do big batches and freeze in zip locks so we can pull some out and add great tomato flavor to omelets, stir fry, and thrown into pasta! Roasting them really brings out the flavor and softens the skins. If you have a favorite way of using or storing your tomatoes please share. Thank you for all the wonderful pictures of your dishes on social media, we love sharing them.

Please let us know right away if you are missing something from your share. Unless it is crossed out on your name label it should be included in your delivery. We do make mistakes and want to make it up to you the following week. Also always let us know if something does not taste right or the quality is unsatisfactory. We strive to deliver very healthy and tasty produce.

Really excited to include Blueberries this week from Shady Grove Road Blueberry Patch in Tuskegee! It is a 2 acre historical blueberry patch owned by Josie Gbadamosi. Follow them on FB and Intagram to keep up with their farm details.

Thank you for supporting small local farms and have a wonderful week!
