Hello 100 degree September 10th. I don't know if y'all remember but this time last year we were hunkering down for up to a foot of snow and temps well below freezing. Thats not not the case this year. We are irrigating the crops this afternoon and still harvesting 6 days a week.
I am very glad that we are still getting some degree heating days. The wet spring really delayed many of our plantings and now they are really coming in. I mean like coming in the tonnage ranges. This week the cantaloupes started to ripen in all of their redolent glory. The large watermelons are coming in next week and the winter squash is not too far behind. This is such a fun time of year when we get to play some sports in the field. By sports I mean tossing cantaloupes and watermelons. If I am doing the pitching the catcher really need to hustle because the the next melon is coming in seconds.
We have two types of cantaloupes available in the share this week. The Arava Melon is an Israeli melon that is a light fleshed melon with great sweetness and the other is a Tuscan Cantaloupe which is an orange fleshed melon, bursting with flavor. Both of these beauties will benefit from a little time on your kitchen counter. Once the melon is fragrant and the blossom end is slightly soft it is ready to eat. I like to chill my melon in the fridge before I crack it open but I must say a hot ripe melon in the field makes all of this work worthwhile.
It's tomato time! We have had a few tomatoes trickling out of the fields for a few weeks but over the last few days it became a torrent. Woohoo, we have lots of yummy tomatoes coming your way. We are also releasing cases of tomatoes each week for making sauce and preserving. These are priced below our wholesale cost so it is a great value. I love having some of our tomatoes for use in cooking over the cold dark winter.
Thank you so much for patience as we moved through all of the spring greens. Your reward is the incredible flavors of the peak of the season.
Enjoy,
Michael, Cayla, Aiden and all of the farmer at Kilt Farm
