Week 3 CSA - New Goodies and Happenings on the Farm

The View from the Tractor

It feels like the last few years have all had their challenges. From elk grazing the farm to pandemic distortions-- and of course we can’t forget the wettest spring we’ve had in 80 years last year—it’s been quite the journey. This season has had it’s own unique challenges that we have been working hard to overcome.

This spring we have seen bouts of wind as well as heat and freezing temperatures seemingly on repeat. The farmers that I am so blessed to be sharing this adventure with have been working their tails off right next to me to insure a steady flow of food. We have planted all of our peppers, tomatoes and eggplants, plus we have seeded the first successions of our summer squash, cucumbers and melons. We also have our winter squash seeded and all of these crops are loving the warm weather.

Normally, we see a dip in production as the spring crops fade and the summer crops start. And of course, we typically plan on the ability to still harvest spinach, arugula, braising mix and all of our spring crops into late June. As nature would have it, the weather this spring is impacting these plans. The dip seems to have shifted earlier into the year.

Over the next few weeks, we will be harvesting beets, turnips, lettuces, bunching greens and salads. We are also starting to see our first carrots and broccoli. We may need to get creative or have a series of smaller shares, but the bounty of the season always makes up for spring challenges.

Thank you for being a member of Kilt Farm and supporting our work. Enjoy your veggies!

Add-Ons

As always, we continue to offer farm-fresh eggs from Skypilot Farms, Kilt Farm honey, Hazel Dell Mushrooms, Flower Bouquets from the Fresh Herb Co, and a rotating variety of pasta from the wonderful Pastificio. But today, we have some exciting news: We are now offering incredibly unique and delicious Colorado-grown whole grain goods from Pueblo Seed & Food Company!

Pueblo Seed & Food Co grows a wide variety of certified organic crops including garlic, pollinated seeds, heritage grains, and legumes. They have been farming for 21 years in Pueblo County Colorado and they always farm with rotational, regenerative, and biodynamic agricultural methods in order to provide the best quality goods to the community.

We have limited amounts available so grab your Colorado-grown and organic treats and spices while you can!

Pueblo Seed Company's Colorado-grown and organic whole grain white wheat flour, heirloom blue corn flour, grass-fed butter, brown sugar, anise seed, and salt.

These cookies are a fun and healthy treat -- Enjoy a sweet snack at work, dip in your coffee in the mornings, or just have one "just because"!

11 cookies per jar.

This amazing cream of wheat is made with organic whole grain wheat flour and salt. Great for a breakfast cereal with warm butter, a touch of sugar, cinnamon, or fruit.

Want a savory, creamy side dish? Throw in some butter or cheese (perhaps some Pueblo Seed & Food Co Chilé spice if you want a little kick) and make an artisan side to accompany your Kilt Farm veggie dishes!

This Colorado-grown and Dried Red Chilé Powder is just the spice you're looking for if you want to add a kick to any meal.

Of course, this local and fresh Chilé powder is unlike any that you'll find from the store-- This is as fresh as it gets.

These one-of-a-kind cookies are made with organic whole grain flours (rye and heritage wheat), and brown sugar, as well as almond flour, salt, and vanilla.

These are the perfect treats to get that sweet-tooth fix without digging into the candy jar. Great with tea or coffee!

11 cookies per jar.

We love garlic around here (who doesn't?). This locally made and dried garlic is the perfect spice to give your fresh-cooked meals a twist.

(Tip: We love roasting our Bok Choy and turnips on the skillet with a little garlic and sea salt)

Artisan White Corn & Chilé Grits sustainably grown and made with organic heirloom white corn, chilé flakes, and salt.

Great as a morning spiced-porridge or as a side dish at dinner!

Sustainably grown and all organic whole grain flakes (rye, heritage wheat, barley), currants, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and blue corn flour.

This is a farm-favorite breakfast-- You really can't go wrong with heritage grains to start your day off!

We can't wait to see what you cook with your shares this week. It's hard to believe we are at week 3 of our CSA -- We can't do this without you!

Wishing you nourishment, health and community,

Michael and your Kilted Farmers
