CSA Week 19 with snow on the divide

Posted on October 13th, 2023 by Michael Moss

View from the Tractor

Wow, what a stunning week it has been. A little rain, plenty of sunshine, and that unmistakable crispness in the air. In the shade, it's wonderfully cool, while in the sun, it warms us up nicely. The sight of the leaves changing colors and this morning, when the clouds cleared, revealing the snow-capped Continental Divide – it's all so quintessentially Colorado! Let's just hope that tonight's forecast of 26 degrees doesn't play any tricks and go even lower. The crops still in the field can handle 26 degrees for a few hours, but anything lower for an extended period could harm even the most frost-hardy crops. So, as we snuggle up in our warm houses, let's think warm thoughts for our crops.

This week, we've really ramped up our efforts for the fall clean-up. We were fortunate to have a few groups of volunteers join us this week to lend a hand. "I love this. It's like a full-body workout," said one of our enthusiastic volunteers. We have a lot of work ahead in the coming weeks, from clearing the fields to dismantling structures and getting everything safely stowed away. Let's not forget about preparing the ground, planting garlic for next year and sowing our cover crop. The work we're doing now lays the groundwork for a successful 2024.

Lastly, we've entered the "stock the pantry" phase of the season. I know that some of our every-other-week members will have their final pick-up this week, while the rest will conclude in one more week. I've added an abundance of extra storage crops to the CSA for this week. This is the perfect time to stock up on anything you might need as we transition into winter.

With deep gratitude,

The Farmers at Kilt Farm
