2024 Farm Share Week 17: Happy Fall Equinox!

Posted on September 20th, 2024 by Kim Barker

Welcome to week 17 of the Farm Share!

3 weeks after this left of our main (summer) season! Thank you for sharing this much of our season so far. We just have a few spots in our Fall Share remaining if you're looking to sign up. There are many pptions available for customization this week so make sure to log on and check it out.

On The Farm

We mowed, we prepped, we harvested, we directed seeded, we weeded. This was a huge bed prep week and as I type this Jonathon, Alex, and Courtney are out planting salad mix and spinach in the hoophouses. The field is looking great, with many beds resting under tarps, which will terminate the finished crop underneath and prepare the soil for compost. Then we will either plant a winter-kill cover crop (oats, peas) or put the tarp on again. That will ensure our beds are ready to plant in the spring, when the ground is too wet to work. Also, soil likes to be covered!

Today on our field walk, we saw many healthy plants growing. 1 more week for cabbage, 1 more week for beets and carrots, 2-3 weeks left for broccolini.

Aren't we lucky to have this late season warm weather? It's like summer but... with blue jays and crows calling.

Happy Fall Equinox. What a beautiful time of year.

What’s Fresh This Week

This week we'll be harvesting the remainder of this bok choy succession - another is growing and coming along to replace it soon. We have the last of this succession's radishes as well. We are also harvesting the first of the fall kohlrabi! So kohlrabi lovers, rejoice! In this way, fall is like a new spring!

We harvested our watermelon this week! This wasn't a huge success for us this season, since it went in too late. We have some to share, so you can find it as available for swaps.

One aspect of the farm we'll be reflecting on for next season is how much to grow of each crop. For example, having not enough watermelon for everyone makes us a bit sad. Should we be growing way more watermelon? What are the costs involved?

MORE EXCITING THINGS TO ADD TO YOUR SHARES.... , sweet corn (freshly harvested in Ailsa Craig!), cauliflower from Pfenning's, sweet potatoes from Angela Wisnoski (Jonathon's mom!).

We hope you enjoy these last few weeks of the summer share.

Thanks for keeping us growing!

Your farmer,

Kim
