2024 Farm Share Week 18: New Crops, New Dog

Posted on September 27th, 2024 by Kim Barker

Welcome to week 18 of the Farm Share!

Somehow, we have come to the final 3 weeks of our main season share. That might explain why I feel so tired! But also grateful, very grateful. Our final week for the share is October 18th, the week after Thanksgiving.

We have 10 more spots remaining in our Fall Farm Share, which runs for 6 weeks starting on... Halloween! We may have to move Farm Pick up that week to Friday... stay tuned!

Green Bags

3 more weeks left to return your bags. Please scour the house to find any stragglers. We reuse these and they are not an insignificant investment for us.

On The Farm

Farm Dogs

This May, right before our Mothers' Day Open House, our sweet 4 year old golden retriever Lucy passed suddenly when she ran out onto the highway and got hit (likely chasing something which she had absolute tunnel vision with when that happened). We were all truly shocked and devastated by this loss. It was also the beginning of our busiest time of year on the farm and I don't know that I even ever shared the news because everything was just so...much.

I meant to pay her tribute with a post and then time went by and I never did.

Lucy, you were a full-of-life dog that deserved many more summers.

Fast forward to this fall, just a couple weeks ago, we were told about someone who was looking to rehome their 7 month old golden retriever, Cooper. Although we didn’t know when we would truly feel ready for another dog, we felt like giving Cooper a home with us was the right thing to do. We’ve had him for just a week now and he has already brought a lot of joy (and a little chaos) into our lives.

Fall + Winter Planning

Beyond cute farm dogs, this week we got almost everything for the fall and winter planted into our unheated hoophouses. Spinach, salad mix, spring onions, kale, and basil. Left to go are bok choy, chard, and radishes. We also planted another round of bok choy into the field.

We will be harvesting these crops throughout November and December for our Fall Share which runs for 6 weeks beginning October 31st. So we have one week "off" before the Fall Share begins.

We have 10 spots remaining in this share! Not sure if you’ve signed up? You can check on your account here https://www.harvie.farm/member/deliveries

If you’d like to keep the veggie train happening you can sign up for the Fall Share on our page here https://www.harvie.farm/farm/mulberry-moon-farm/signup

We also prepped for our fall garlic planting! Will you be planting garlic this year? We have bulk garlic available for planting!

We saw this spectacular toad in the field today. Ever since getting our pond the population in the field has skyrocketed...and the population of slugs has gone way down!

What’s Fresh This Week

Exciting new harvests this week – we are harvesting our fall carrots, beets, cabbages, and hakurei turnips! We’re very happy with how these crops look so far. The carrots are still a trial for us but definitely the best we’ve had in awhile. We also have kohlrabi back again and the last of our bok choy!

We are bringing in Acorn squash from HOPE ECO-Farms Collective in Alymer, and have some butternut squash remaining.

There are a few remaining tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, shishitos and ground cherries and hot peppers available for swaps.

We harvested from both our old and new bed of kale this week, and we marveling at both. The old kale has been a workhorse, providing us with so much kale all the way since May. The stalks are thick and look like palm trees. This is such a robust plant! If I had to grow something based on pure survival, I would grow kale.

On the contrast, the new kale is soft and fluffy and tender.

I recommend you cook with the old, and make salads with the new :)

.

Tis also the season for dill and cilantro! They are looking fine.
