Tuesday was the first day of autumn and the week has been lovely -- sunshine and warmth.
After the frost on the weekend finished off the tomatoes, we have been able to spend this beautiful weather taking down the tomatoes. We remove the plants, then the twine trellis and finally the cedar stakes. Afterwards, we'll mow the remaining straw mulch, rake it into the paths, put fresh compost on the beds and then cover them up with landscape fabric. Hopefully by Friday, another section of the garden will be ready for spring planting!
This past Saturday saw the first Farm Dinner at Persephone. Katy has been working with me in the garden, but is actually a trained chef and has her own catering company. On Saturday, eight lucky people, plus farm staff, got to enjoy a delicious dinner from her hands. The dinner consisted of five fantastic courses consisting of crostini with salmon, roasted pepper soup with radish pesto and spiced olive oil, chicory salad with shaved root vegetables, braised oxtail and polenta, and finally sheep's milk pana cotta with roasted plums. Wow! What a way to celebrate the end of summer. We're working on hosting regular farm dinners next summer. We'll keep you posted!
