The weather has been a mixed bag of sun and rain, warmer and cooler, but after a couple of early frosts (which were patchy at our place), we haven't had a hard frost yet. I think that will change later this week. Cool and wet is what the fall crops prefer and so they are thriving and there is lots still in the field. We will probably continue to harvest in November, offering vegetables on Farm Stand. If you haven't signed up for Farm Stand be sure to via this link. You'll get a notification when we have produce available. We'll continue with deliveries on Fridays, until the weather is too cold or the field is bare! There are lots of carrots, onion, winter squash, along with a wide array of leafy greens!
In between harvesting, we continue to prep the garden for next year. Large sections are now covered with landscape fabric to manage grass and protect the soil. On other beds, we are spreading leaves -- we have many deciduous trees around the garden and so we are raking them up and thickly layering them onto empty beds. And onto the garlic. After not growing garlic for several years because of the challenges posed by quack grass, we have once again planted 2 beds of garlic -- that works out to about 1500 cloves of garlic! Here's hoping the leaf mulch keeps the garlic cozy over winter and that it thrives next year.
