Week 2: WE GOT RAIN

Posted on June 26th, 2023 by Kristine Hammel

It rained. Sweet relief.

We had about 2/3 inch on Friday night and another 1/4 inch on Sunday. Maybe more to come on Monday/Tuesday.

When I went out to the garden on Monday morning, it seemed to me that the tomato plants had doubled in size!

This rain will also make it much easier to pound in the stakes for the tomato trellising. We have 9 beds of tomatoes, each 100 feet long. Each bed needs about 35 cedar stakes, pounded in 1 foot deep, to support the tomatoes. It's a great upper body workout! That's the main task this week, aside from weeding and mulching paths to keep them tidy and accessible.

We have salad turnips starting this week! And dill and cilantro are now available. The first few broccoli and cauliflower will also make their first appearance. It looks like there will be lots more in coming weeks, along with cabbage. The peas are blooming, so they should join the line up soon. And the beets are loving the rain. Green onions and baby leek coming soon too.

Have a great week!

Kristine

P.S. For those members receiving their first biweekly share, here are the highlights from last week's Happening. Read on for info about how the week works and some great veg storage and cooking tips.

Welcome to our 14th season growing fresh vegetables and herbs for our community!

Thank you to returning members for your continuing support and thank you to new members for giving our CSA (community shared agriculture) program a try. I hope you have a delicious summer and autumn with your family and friends.

You'll be receiving two emails this week (and every week you receive a share). First, an email with what's in your share this week and the opportunity to swap items or add eggs. And then a second email with the details for where and when to pick up your share.

What to do with all those veg?

Well, first you'll have to put them in the fridge. Here is a handy guide that you can print and pop on your fridge to help you store veg right. Even the leafy greens should keep at least 1 week.

Next, you'll want some handy formulas (not recipes) to help you make use of different types of veg. And Cooksmarts is the place to go for this. They have great infographics for making salad dressings, stir fries and more. Plus they have guides for what to have in your pantry so that you can quickly and easily put together a meal...they even have these adapted to different cuisines and diets (vegan, Thai, and many more).

And finally, here is our guide for CSA. It covers all you need to know to have a great season cooking and enjoying fresh veg.
