While the days continue to be warm and sunny and the tomatoes bountiful, the autumn flavours are increasing in your shares this week. We now have radish, arugula, and napa cabbage joining the line up. September is delicious!
And this pleasant weather is helping us tidy the garden. There are always a few spots that got away from us during the hustle and bustle of July and August. So now we are doing some weeding and then seeding some cover crops into beds that have been harvested and are now empty. We seed oats and peas because they grow quickly in autumn weather and are able to protect the soil with their roots and shoots.
Along the way, we are harvesting several crops for seeds! As a new adventure this year, we are working with Hawthorne Farm Seeds (from near Harriston, ON) to grow seeds for gardeners. Our seed crops include onions, fava beans, bread seed poppy, sugar snap peas, flowers (calendula, zinnia, celosia, French marigold, cosmos, sunflower), soybeans and a couple of winter squash. It's a completely new process for us and fun!
I hope you have a chance to enjoy the sunshine this last week of September!
