Hello Farmshare Members!
Happy week two of the farmshare season! We had so much fun packing your shares last week. We love seeing everyone's selections as we fill up the boxes!
This week we'll be harvesting garlic scapes! Garlic scapes are the tender flower shoot of hard neck garlic. The entire bud and stem of these curly shoots can be eaten and have a mild garlic flavor. Each garlic plant only produces one flower shoot or scape, so they are only available for a short time in the spring. If you are new to this crop, you could experiment with these recipes
We have been noticing the effects of this year's exceptionally cool spring, and many of our crops are behind what we expect for this time of year. But things are starting to catch up and we plan to harvest some bigger heads of lettuce this week and will be bunching lots of broccolini!
Along with harvesting, we have been doing a lot of transplanting. Noah and Charlie have been working long days to get the ground ready to plant. Last week we planted a big succession of brassicas for the farmshare - cauliflower, cabbage, collards, kales, broccoli and romanesco- all got tucked into the soil! We'll look forward to harvesting these in late August.
Enjoy your veggies!
Best,
The River Run Crew
