Hello Farmshare members,
We are welcoming the first week of September with POTATOES! A River Run Farm favorite crop, we're excited to be digging the first potatoes of the season. (Above is a picture of the potato field from July when the plants were blooming.)
This week you'll find Cal White or Grad Duke potatoes in your box. Cal White is a white skinned variety with white flesh and great flavor. Grand Duke is a yellow potatoes, and it's delicious too! We planted lots of different kinds of potatoes in the spring, so stay tuned for more varieties to come- red, purple and fingerling.
The potatoes in this weeks share will be "new" potatoes, which means the skins are un cured and they don't store the same way was cured potatoes. So keep them in your fridge and don't wait too long to eat them! You'll also find that new potatoes are extra tender and cook quickly. We'll be digging tender skinned "new" potatoes by hand for the next couple weeks. Once the potatoes have had more time to dry down and cure in the field, we'll hook up the tractor drawn potato lifter and spend a few harvest days getting them all out of the field.
Also in your share this week you might find cauliflower, chard and garlic. Lots of yummy stuff to fuel the transitions that September may bring to your routine!
Enjoy,
The River Run Team
