Last year we started a flock of New Hampshire Red hens that are currently laying the eggs you enjoy each week. We feed them an Alabama-made, non-GMO feed and keep them outside with access to our grass and woods on the farm. One of the things we wanted to do for an educational thing for our kids was let a hen hatch some eggs. So three weeks ago we put around a dozen eggs under a 'broody' hen (one that is trying to set on eggs). Yesterday they hatched (it takes 21 days like clockwork!) and now there are 9 baby chicks being lovingly cared for by their mama! The kids love it. My 7 year old son Patrick took the picture on the update this week. It is amazing to see how the hen is perfectly designed to keep her babies at just the right temperature, help them find food and water, show them how to hunt for bugs, and jealously protects them from any threats. All things we are responsible for if we artificially incubate them!
