Well, everyone's all tucked in for a very chilly night. The high desert has taught us how to plan for and to expect frost, but the first night around 20 degrees always puts us a little on edge. Most crops with somewhat sensitive greens that are still in the field (lettuce, salad greens, herbs, radishes and turnips) are covered (and some double covered) with frost blankets to protect them from a very hard freeze tonight. Most of our fall greenhouse crops won't be ready for a few more weeks, since our lovely summer crops were taking up the space until recently; so we try to extend our field harvest just a little longer, it's always a dance.
This week we've got the last peppers of the season available for boxes, and the first of the delicata squash. We had a really awful winter squash year this season, and have very little yield to show for our efforts. There's always a crop failure or two... and let's be honest, usually it's winter squash. The delicata we do have, though, are sweet and creamy. Don't forget you can eat the skins of these, no need to peel (yay!). Our last of the season green peppers are a mix of italian (the unripe version of the sweet red ones you love) and bells. Both cook the same and don't worry, it's not a chili pepper, neither are spicy! We do have poblanos once more too, if you need some mild spice.
Next week, for the last delivery we will be offering a few of the favorites in bulk quantities if you choose to add them to your order. Expect to see:
5# bags of tomatillos
1# bags of garlic
5# bags of carrots
10# bags of onions
Winter Luxury Pie Pumpkins (great for decorating and eating)
If you choose to add these to your order, make sure you check your label and box to make sure everything is there, as you may have a second box to grab, which will also be labelled.
And don't forget Central Oregon Fill Your Pantry for more local bulk goods!
