Holy moly, we are not loving the forecast for next week. Next week on the farm, we're starting extra early to get all the food in before it gets hot, and to get done with work before it gets even hotter (107 degrees?!). There's a lot to think about when it gets this hot, but mostly we think about water, and what needs it the most, and how much we can give it. We worry about germinating seeds that could cause us harvest shortages 1-2 months down the line, and flowers that may drop without turning into fruit on summer crops. But in the end, there's not much we can do about the weather, so we do whatever we can and then we find some cool water to jump into in the afternoon.
Along with the heat, come even more summer crops! We're so excited to have succulent green beans for shares this week. We grew pole beans this year (pictured above) which have been doing quite well and much more pleasant to pick than bush beans, though setting up their trellis did take a good chunk of time. We almost always prefer, though, to do extra prep work if it makes harvest quicker and easier.
We've also got the first potatoes from our outdoor field, the first fresh red onions, and the first cured garlic. It's so exciting to see these slower growing plants come to maturity this time of year, they keep us going (and busy) through the summer heat.
We hope you're all well, and eating well too!
