FINAL Fall Share of the Season

Posted on November 13th, 2023 by Ashley Thompson

Well folks, we've made it to the end!  Pretty much everything has been harvested out of our field and after a great showing at Fill Your Pantry, our stocks are minimal.  Thank you to all of you who were able to make it, it was great to see you.

For our final share of the season, we have some gorgeous fresh greens from our hoophouses, and some special crops that we saved just for you!  We've got plenty of extra items this week, so feel free to add some extras to your box and stock up!

This week we have a very special squash for you that we grew for the first time this year and haven't offered in boxes yet- Winter Sweet Kabocha.  This is a squash that will hang out all winter, only getting sweeter until you are ready for it.  It requires a long curing time after harvest to sweeten fully, which is why we've saved it for last.  This is a great one to roast and puree.  I love to roast squashes like this one and freeze extra puree for easy soups or baking on demand.

I like this simple recipe with no add-ins, because then my puree can be made sweet or savory later on depending on what I'm cooking.

If squash puree is not your jam, Kabocha squashes are also great wedged and roasted like in this recipe, for a great side dish.  You can even prepare them as wedges, and if you have too much to eat, scoop the leftovers out and make a puree, two in one!

We also have plenty of Celeriac (Celery Root) available this week- my absolute favorite soup vegetable.  We're headed for a little farmer retreat these next couple days, and making a root veggie mash as part of our dinner plan. I love that celeriac adds some extra flavor and brightness to this classic, and frequently toss some salad turnips in there as well (if you still have some from last week or Fill Your Pantry).  Here's a great basic recipe to get you started.

Thank you so much for your support this season.  We've loved feeding you and look forward to planning our program for next year.  We will be in touch shortly with details regarding renewal for next year and where to find our food in between.  We wish you and yours happy holidays, and hope you get to gather over some good food.

Your farmers,

Ashley, Caleb, and the Sungrounded Crew.
