A photo of Jeff (the patriarch-first generation), Will (the son-second generation), and Rose (third generation) of Creeksong Farm
Our fall crops were spared by the flooding. It's just pure luck that they just happened to be planted on higher ground further away from the creek that overflowed its banks and brought us beaches (tiki bar anyone?). We have power and water back. Our lives are fairly normal. We're doing our best to support those who suffered much worse consequences from Helene. Helene is all we talk about. And the consequences reverberate. For example, while Tumbling Shoals Farm has Hickory and Charlotte farmers markets operating normally, yesterday, the Boone farmers market was displaced by the town without warning to set up a FEMA base camp. It's not FEMA's fault, they go where the town tells them to. But it doesn't matter who decided what (at least for the moment), the market has been displaced and has the farmer and crafter small businesses, some of them still without power and other intense losses, suffering an economic after-shock. One of those is our farmer friends at Creeksong Farm-a two(three!) generation farm (not "second" because both generations are still making their living from this farm!) that relies almost entirely on the Boone Farmers Market for their income. They did not suffer damage in the storm and so will not find aid available to them, and suddenly it feels like they weren't spared at all. Even when the market finds an alternative location, the change, especially without enough warning, will greatly diminish the sales. And so, if you notice that suddenly there is a lot of Creeksong Farm produce (who are not certified organic but have been growing organically before it was even a certifiable thing in 1979) appearing in the share options, this is why. We are doing our best to divert our own production to our other market outlets and absorb Creeksong's production into our harvest shares. Please help us support our community (who did not suffer damage from the actual storm) and keep this farming community vibrant! Thanks, as always, for your support of us and local food!
