Last week was a busy one for us. Typically we would be digging your potatoes using the tractor. But we found the new potatoes to be very thin skinned this year (most likely due to the dry ground) so we decided to dig them by hand to not scratch the skin. We also wrapped up the 2018 Garlic Harvest and are very happy with this years crop. In just a couple weeks they will have finished drying (see picture) in the barn and will start making an appearance in the shares.
Never thought it would be happen after all the rain we got in the Spring but now we are constantly having to run the irrigation. Luckily our friends who used to own Table Top Farm (Nevada, Iowa) had a lot of irrigation supplies looking for a new home. This has made it much easier for us (with a great design by farm crew member Tom) to just flip some switches and occasionally move a hose around instead of having to move entire irrigation systems around to different fields. Never once have I had to irrigate potatoes or onions, but with the dry weather we are doing it this year!
Hard to believe, but in the next few weeks we are going to be planting fields out into Fall Crops. Yes, it is still July but the time for planting and planning the Fall harvests have begun. There are still opening for the Fall Share if anyone is interested in signing up that hasn't already!
Have a great week,
Farmer Ben and the Crew
