After the last couple of weeks I thought the "heat of the summer" was over with. Looks like I was wrong as this week looks to be a very hot one! We are still working to put the farm back together from the Derecho as well as keep up with typical field work. I have a rule that once the heat index is around 100 degrees I send the crew home for the day so we've been starting earlier in the morning to get as much done as we can before it get's to hot.
The watermelon harvest is almost over for this season and while it wasn't what I realistically expected to harvest, all things considered it was a pretty good one. Everyone (unless you choose you didn't want a watermelon) should get one this week. The Cherry Tomatoes are just starting to come into swing and we only have 45 pints to distribute this week. The planting still looks good so soon I'm anticipating everyone will get some.
The cucumber and pepper plantings were pretty much wiped out in the storm so I'm not expecting there will be much if any harvests for them this season. One really surprising thing to me was how well the Summer and Winter Squash plantings recovered from the storm. They are big bushy plants and looked pretty sad but seem to be recovering the better than I would have thought!
Have a great week,
Farmer Ben and the Crew
