As I've mentioned in the past we have had some issues with the development going on around the farm. We really appreciate all the kind words of support and offering to help you all have expressed. Last week, with on 0.8" rain, the tomato field got flooded and we lost quite a bit of plastic mulch as you can see from the photo. Much to our surprise we didn't lose nearly as many tomato as originally thought when we were looking at the field from the road. We lost around 1/4 of the planting, but originally thought half or more were going to be a loss. We are having the NRCS (National Resource Conservation Service) come out again as we've discovered some new places of flooding/washout in the Farm/Development ground to the North of us that we didn't see before!
Obviously the weather this season has not been very friendly to your Spring Crops! Coldest April on record and then the hottest May on record does not make for happy plants (or farmers necessarily) and we are doing our best to adapt to the cards Mamma Nature is playing this season. Even though the tomato field is not in the best of shape we did pot up (very large pots) a good number of tomatoes last month to grow out in our heated greenhouse. Farm crew member Tom has a lot of experience growing tomatoes indoors (both hydroponically and in soil) so he has been a great help in this experiment! We also have been seeding a lot more micro greens for you all lately. Our thoughts are that if we can't enjoy the mature plants from the field at least we will still be getting their flavor in the form of micro greens!
Not sure if any of you have noticed the opportunity of being able to purchase ala carte items to compliment your shares. We have partnered up with Bee Grateful Gardens to offer Grey Oyster Mushrooms to you. We hope to be partnering up with other producers this season to be able to offer everyone extra treats that we don't produce at the farm!
Have a great week,
Farmer Ben and the Crew
