You’ll be getting another beautiful head of lettuce this week called, Red Butter Crunch. You’ll also be able to try a couple new vegetables as part of your Farm Food adventure.
Actually, it is week 2 of our Farm Share CSA season since we delivered to our weekly members and half of our bi-weekly members last week. Welcome to our new bi-weekly members this week.
I recommend you try the Kohlrabi this week. It may look like an alien from outer space but it is delicious and very versatile. It is juicy, crunchy and just a tad sweet so you can slice, shred, or cut into sticks for snacking - I hear they are great with peanut butter. You can use it instead of radish in the recipe I just posted in the Harvie Community Facebook Group.
Garlic Scapes are something special to try too! They taste like garlic but are the stem of the soft neck garlic bulb as it grows in the spring. Mix them into your salads, omelettes and stir-fries.
You may have heard about damage to farms in the area because of the storms we had last week. There was hail, driving winds and even tornadoes. Thankfully, even though Willow Haven Farm got plenty of rain, we didn’t receive hail or wind damage. Our sympathy is for those farms which did because it sets back their growing vegetables. Being part of the Farm Share CSA model helps support farmers when bad things happen. We know we have a supportive group of people who will be flexible about making adjustments if difficult weather and other factors out of our control necessitate it. Farmers are a very creative group of people and can usually make lemonade from lemons.
I also want you to get the most out of your Farm Share CSA experience so here are my recommendations for this week:
- Join Harvie members closed Facebook group for inspiration, recipe and menu ideas and to ask your questions about using your vegetables. It is fun to interact with CSA members from Willow Haven and other farms around the country. Join Here
- Take Care of Your Box - Don't rip your box, please. Save it to return with your next delivery. How to Open Your Box Video.
- Don't your lettuce waste away - Learn how to Store Your Lettuce So It Lasts
- Please take the post card out of your box and give it to a friend. I hope to reward many of you with a $25 credit on your account when one of your friends join. Find out more
- Check our last week's Farm Happening to stay up to date on the harvest and farm news.
I can't wait to see what you make with your veggies this week. Post pictures of your veggies and your amazing meals in the Facebook Group. Let's see how many Willow Haven Farm members will join this week.
We'll keep farming for you!
