Today, Monday, the vegetables are enjoying a rain day. It is a perfect, light, soaking rain which means that we can turn off the irrigation in the fields. We still picked vegetables in the rain which actually helps keep them fresher, longer. Rain days are also great for doing the important but non-urgent tasks of cleaning and organizing our work areas.
While it was dry last week we were able to get so much field work done. It’s amazing how much can be accomplished when you have a few good men. This month we have a crew of strapping young men working on the farm.
- Two nephews flew in from Indiana to spend a few weeks on the family farm.
- Two young men in our church are spending a second summer with us.
- Our two farm sons are leading crews and assisting in the field.
Stringing productive days together is essential for us to keep this farm running.
- One of the nephews weed-whacked our fence line around the pastures. This is an important maintenance job that too often gets neglected when we are busy with vegetables.
- The younger nephew learned how to hoe this week. It was necessary in the potato field where the weeds had gotten out of hand while we were planting in other fields. Those potatoes need room to grow under the soil - get those weed roots out of the way!
- A crew of three farm boys spent all day on the transplanter planting the sweet potato “slips.” They did 10 rows!
