Good afternoon members!
I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Our grandfather, Jack Pilgreen, who passed down the land where we now grow vegetables, served bravely as a combat medic in the Pacific front during World War II. I think about his sacrifices often. We sure are thankful for all of those who have served.
It's getting hot, which means that it is berry season! It's also getting close to chanterelle mushroom season, which is one of our favorite times of year. At the farm this week, we tackled a lot of infrastructure needs like adding shade to the tunnels, running new irrigation, and setting up our new propagation area. Supplies arrived for us to start growing pea shoots and radish microgreens to add to the salad mix. In the mornings we harvest greens, and potatoes or carrots in the evening. Good news! Potatoes and carrots will be available every week for the rest of the season.
We harvest our blackberries in Downsville. Today will be the first time I have been there in a few weeks. There will be a few berries, but not enough for the entire CSA this week. Next week, blackberries should be available for every share. Week 9 might also be the first week for chanterelle mushrooms. Peaches will still be an add on for this week.
Fiesta folks please remember that your only pick up day is Tuesday, and home delivery folks please keep leaving your ice chests out, especially this time of year! Thank you all for the social media shout-outs, we love seeing what y'all cook. I am really inspired by Ron's carrot cake this week, so I think I am going to make a purple carrot cake for Emi this Sunday!
I hope you all cook something tasty this week! Also, please like and share our First Friday on the Farm video on the Union Parish library Facebook page. Our video on mayhaws released today!
Sincerely,
Conrad Cable
