We put in the hours of work in the summer and fall, all looking forward to reaping the rewards of this week's harvest! This is seriously one of the best farm shares we have produced. Below, I will explain why I believe it's the best farm share week in the history of our farm.
This is the final week for tomatoes. The last two-day freeze ended our tomato season, but we are now starting seeds for the summer! Those red slicers are available for swap or extras. Back in July, we started the cabbage seeds for your shares. The seedlings were transplanted the last week in August. Kaden and I have been eagerly watching them thrive until the perfect harvest week...NOW! There will be enough for the next two weeks. This week, we are also offering cauliflower, bok choy, and broccolini. January 2021, we only had a pitiful amount of salad mix, and baby kale. Below is a photo from 1/7/21. We had time to plant an orchard, because we didn't have many vegetables to tend, or harvest. For me, the juxtaposition of these early January photos sum up our passion and determination to be better today than we were yesterday.
*** the warm weather, then a sudden cold front has shocked the broccolini and sent the florets into a bolt, hence the flowers. The flowers are fine cooked, or can even be a garnish for salads. Bundles will be around for the next three weeks, but I cannot guarantee their production in February. The fourth succession of the purple broccolinis was meant for next month, but was a casualty of the freeze and my lack of forethought to use protective row cover.
Next week, we will feature all of the leafy greens mixes, and lettuce, arugula, kale, endive, frilly mustard, plus radishes, carrots, cabbages, bok choys, broccolini, and scallions. The core of the rest of the season's shares will be made from these veggies, minus the cabbage and broccolini. Stowe Creek Farm has delivered a new batch of honey pints! Unfortunately there is a plastic shortage, and the honey bear containers are on backorder. Alex also has some free-range eggs in the inventory for anyone wanting to swap, or add them as an extra.
I believe a cooking challenge would be good fun! I added a few yellow carrot bundles to the inventory as extras for swaps. Here's the rules: you order the yellow carrots, prepare a carrot soufflé with the yellow carrots, post and tag Current Farms on social media! There will then be something special added to your next share- a free bundle of yellow carrots! We haven't done a cooking challenge before, but maybe some of you are brave enough to put your culinary skills to the test! The yellow carrots have been a great success this season, and I really think that they deserve to be the center of a dish! (If you accept the challenge, and your next share with the free bundle of carrots, already has carrots in it from Harvie, then you will receive both the bunch in your share, plus the free yellow carrot bunch.)
Bon appetite! Have a great week!
Best, Conrad Cable
