Good evening farm share members! We have a loaded share for y'all this week! Lots of root crops, plus a delicious selection of salad greens! New this week is our microgreen mix! We added arugula and red radish microgreens to our pea shoots and sunflower shoots, for a mix that we have never offered until this week! I also added a choice of jams, in case your fridge is full of vegetables! ***I sincerely apologize to those who received unwashed eggs last week. It's been so long since I ordered from another farm beside 3 Board Farm or Stowe Creek Farm, I didn't realize I needed to ask for them to be washed. It's all worked out now, so that will not happen again.
Next Week
We are really starting to feel the effects from the crops we lost in the Arctic Blast. We needed to rely a lot more on our root crops at the beginning of this season, so the leafy greens could recover, so the roots are finally starting to run out. Next week might be the last carrots of the season, until our next crop is ready in 7 weeks. The kohlrabi row is getting awfully short as well. Good news, I think that we will not have to cut this season short, like I thought might be the case at the beginning of the year!
Farm Update
Tuna and I are both wiped out and sore as heck from all of the planting we did this week! We emptied the entire greenhouse except for microgreens. Monday and Tuesday we planted more than 10,000 transplants! Cabbages, cauliflower, lettuce, scallions, kale, collards, rainbow chard, kohlrabi, and so much more are in the ground and growing! This is one of the earliest spring plantings we done since we started farming. We are in the ground a full month earlier than last February.
Today, we started squash and green beans that will be planted in two weeks in one of our covered tunnels. We don't sell those anywhere else but the farm shares. Most farmers plant squash and beans either March 15, or April 1. It's a bit of extra work to extend the season, but having those crops really early is a fun way for us to say thank you for all of those weeks of so many leafy greens!
So far, we have three field blocks completely planted, so about 40% of all of our row space. Since we emptied all of the seed trays this week, we spent most of today starting new crops. We will have an early start on beets, and I used this round of seeding to add a bunch of herbs into the mix. We already have little basils and parsleys, but today we added dill and cilantro to the line up. Spring is right around the corner and I can already smell it!
I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day! Thank you to all of our new farm share members who joined in the last few weeks! I hope you are really enjoying the fresh food from our farm!
