Farm Happenings for June 30, 2023

Posted on June 26th, 2023 by Alex Smith

Hello All,

Reminder! If you receive this farm happening, you are picking up your share on Friday 6/30 at your normal pick up location.

Farm News:  We are all pretty grateful for the rains of the past week. Before the rain, we worked hard to get everything planted and stay on top of the weeds. Now, with a well saturated ground, the weeds will flush again and it feels like the crops are growing faster than I can keep up with. Our first wave of tomato plants grew about 6 inches in height since Friday afternoon. Our big task for this week is to finish pounding stakes and trellising the tomatoes.

A little culinary adventure:  on Friday, my family and I made farm burgers, a big fresh farm salad, and roasted kohlrabi/carrots. The roasted veggies were a big hit with the toddlers. We cut the carrots up into sticks, peeled and cut the kohlrabi into half rounds. We coated them all with olive oil, salt, and pepper and cooked them at 415F for about 45 minutes. We sprinkled some grated parmesan cheese about halfway through. Chef's kiss

This weeks featured picture is the manure pit for Farmer Matt's big biogas project. Farmer Matt is building a great big new building on the farm that will collect and digest the food waste from the Dining Hall as well as the manure from the neighbors dairy cows. The resulting methane gas will be turned into electricity to power both farms. This is a very exciting renewable energy project for the farm. The concrete was poured for the pit last week. The farm crew practiced their graffiti skills over lunch before the walls of the pit were backfilled with soil.

Enjoy the veggies!
