Farm Happenings for July 26, 2024

Posted on July 22nd, 2024 by Alex Smith

Hello All,

Our summer cucurbits are in full swing. We grow a number of different crops from the botanical family Cucurbitae. This includes summer squash, zucchini, cantaloupes, melons, and winter squash. For the time being, it's just the former three, but the others are looking very promising for later in the season. I carefully consider crop families like this when developing my farming strategy. This includes rotating where we grow similar crops because of common diseases and pests, as well as soil and irrigation needs.

Also, Corn! It's been a hard road for corn this year. We have experienced unprecedented deer pressure here on this farm. They hit the first waves of corn hard. We have had a friend of the farm harvest a couple of the deer, but not before damage was done. The ears are a little undersized but still taste amazing. We also suffered some poor pollination and a sap beetle infestation. We grade out the buggy, poorly pollinated ears for processing, but we still aren't super proud of the final product. For that reason, this week we are including 6 ears per share free of charge.

Pictured:  Last week, the crew surprised me with a "dress like Alex" day. I am incredibly flattered and thrilled at how fashionable, practical, and excited everyone looked.

Have a great week, enjoy the veggies!

Alex

Please note that not all produce in your share has been washed, including leafy greens. We recommend you wash all produce prior to eating.
