Farm Happenings for August 23, 2024

Posted on August 19th, 2024 by Alex Smith

Happy Monday!

Last week was an exciting week of harvests here at the College Farm. We finished hauling in the 2024 potatoes and started harvesting a beautiful and delicious watermelon crop. We have both seeded and seedless melons available - both average around 6.5 lbs per melon. Please take care to select the kind you want.

As always with Melons and Cantaloupe - it is very difficult to ensure perfect ripeness. We cut open dozens of each to check but it is still possible some underripe ones slip through. If you happen to get a melon or lope that is unsatisfactory, please let us know and we will get you a new one.

The attached photo was taken after I finished cultivating our first field of fall brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbages). I use a tractor to clean up the space between rows once or twice a week. Soon, after the final cultivation, I will seed a cover crop. The cover crop will begin growing as the crop matures. Once we are done harvesting, our cover crop will already be there protecting the field for winter. No more tillage needed!

Have a great week!

Alex

Please note that not all produce in your share has been washed, including leafy greens. We recommend you wash all produce prior to eating.
