Farm Happenings for September 27, 2024

Posted on September 23rd, 2024 by Alex Smith

Happy astronomical fall,

As of 08:22 yesterday it is officially fall. While we will still have lots of important growing weather over the next 6 weeks, but the balance of the work continues to shift more and more towards harvests, cover cropping, and non-production fall projects.

Late last week we started our first harvests of fall broccoli. We are very excited about a strong looking crop so far. Broccoli can be tricky to grow, but so far it is producing beautiful heads. We are also now offering carrots for the first time in a few weeks. It has been a challenging carrot year on the farm so far. But this latest wave, although late, is big, well-shaped, and tasty.

Please note a new offering for us, "Yummy Peppers." These are a lunchbox style of sweet pepper. They are super sweet and great for kids. As the style would suggest, they go well in lunch boxes. I like to eat them plain, but they pair nicely with all of the good pepper dips (hummus, ranch, etc). They are a hit with the picky eaters in my house.

I have also included Habanero peppers in the delivery this week. They are insanely spicy. They also happen to be small and orange like the Yummy Peppers. Please take care not to confuse them - that probably wouldn't go well in the lunch box. Habaneros are smaller, wrinkly and pale orange; whereas the Yummys are slightly bigger, glossy, smooth, and bright orange.

Have a great week!

Alex

Please note that not all produce in your share has been washed, including leafy greens. We recommend you wash all produce prior to eating.
