a strange sense of calm

Posted on June 14th, 2020 by John Eisenstein

Good morning!

It's a bizarre contrast, reading the morning news and seeing the disturbing images contained therein, while at the same time being serenaded by exuberant birdsong (just after dawn) or crickets (nighttime) and enjoying the spectacular sight of fireflies against the darker woods (night) or walking around the corner of the barn and seeing the mountainscape pictured above.  How did the poet Tennyson put it in "The Passing of Arthur"? "...or else, as if the world were wholly fair, but that these eyes of men are dense and dim, and have not power to see it as it is... d#!@ that coronavirus!"  Or something like that.

New this week are "Pearl Drop" and"Mini Purplette" onions, pictured below.

I put the tape dispenser there to give you an idea of scale.  These are among my favorite onions.  The pearl drops are milder than the purplettes and are suitable for salads, although I have been known to eat the purplettes raw if I'm feeling ornery.  The greens (tops) are also highly edible, though not as mild as scallion or spring onion greens.

Peas are starting to come in as well.  We grow two types, both of which have edible pods.  Snap peas are plump and juicy and sweet.  Snow peas are thinner and have more pea flavor.  We're not growing shelling peas this year, or soup peas, or livestock forage peas.  No much demand for those last ones among our customers these days.

For those of you in the State college area, Webster's cafe is back open, so those of you who originally signed up to pick up there, but moved elsewhere because of COVID, can now move back there. I also encourage you to buy some books while you are there, although sadly Elaine has gotten rid of the Romance section.  alas!

Reminder:  if we make a mistake packing your box, please let me know--- we would welcome the chance to make amends.  We try our best but it isn't easy custom packing 180 orders perfectly, and we are only human.  Thanks (almost) everybody who has gotten an imperfectly packed box for being so understanding.
