Hi everyone,
Super short and quick message this week as want to go out and harvest lettuce before it gets to be super hot. We have a few gooseberries this week-- not the crop we dream about but not bad considering the youth of many of the plants and a good piece better than last year. One of my favorites but NOT for the faint of heart-- they are flavorful and are mildly sweet, but quite tart and if you are expecting fruit like blueberries or peaches, I'd advise you to skip them. Also beets are staring to come in and I saw some little baby cucumbers on the vines, though they are not ready yet. We still have lots of zucchini, though. Do we ever. Eat up.
Reminder: If you can't pick up your share on the day of delivery, it is your responsibility to contact me, or the site host, by 10 A.M. the following morning if you still intend to go get it. Many site hosts are, quite understandably, concerned about spoilage or animals-- even bears, in the case of the Lemont site-- and so please do try to pick up on the delivery day. Some site hosts have, in the past, contact people who have not picked up but it is not their job to do so. If you know you can't get your share one week you can always reschedule it for another.
Notice: Harvie has informed me they are changing the way extra fees are incurred due to swapping out inexpensive items for costlier ones. In the past, there was a 5% buffer, so that if you swapped out a $3 lettuce for a $4 box of peppers, there was no extra charge. To be honest, I do not understand the new system-- the explanation I got on when extra charges are incurred was confusing to my brain. I'm trying to configure things so that extra charges for you are rare-- I don't care if I'm giving you a $21.33 value for a $20 box, as long as I can pay the property taxes and the employees- but it may take a bit for me to figure it out. If you see a charge you don't understand, please contact Harvie support about it, not me. I'm a little annoyed that they did this, but apparently other Harvie farmers were asking for it.
