The rain it raineth every day

Posted on September 5th, 2021 by John Eisenstein

Just as we were finally drying out from Ida, I woke this morning to the sound of rain on the roof, the air chilly and damp.  How quickly the seasons change!  The first of the kale (pictured above) is ready to pick, and summer favorites like okra and zucchini have had their massive daily production come to a screeching halt.  Or near- halt, I should say.  Tomatoes too are almost finished-- I think-- at least the ones in the hoophouses are about done with their productive lives, and the late- season tomatoes in the field have not been thrilled with the rainy august.  Not to worry.  Next week we'll have winter squash and kiwibwrries available, the sweet potatoes look great, and other fall crops are proceeding more or less according to plan.

Final word on the shishito peppers: about 7 out of 11 are mild, no heat.   three out of `19 have very slight heat, and one out of fifteen is moderately hot.   Pepperoncinis are all hot, but not as hot as jalapenos.
