Garlic, Shallots and carrots, oh my!

Posted on July 17th, 2020 by Michael Moss

TLDR: Farm is running strong in the heat, garlic is curing and the first of our summer fruit hits your share. Oh and a fruit update nd some special add ons.

Happy middle of July. I hope you are doing well and staying cool.

This was a big week at the farm as we started to harvest and cure our hard neck garlic. The process of harvesting and curing crops that were planted last year is a good indicator of reaching the height of the season. We have a solid bounty of garlic and shallots with even more to come out of the field next week. After the garlic cures, we process it and store it, but more importantly, we start putting it into your shares. Yum garlic.

Now that it is in the height of summer the tomatoes are really moving with the first of our field tomatoes ripening. This week we will have a small amount of Paste Tomatoes available in shares. Our high tunnel tomatoes are coming along and are delicious. I know I might be burying the lead here, but this week we will have the first of our Shishito Peppers coming out of the fields. We will also be harvesting the first Italian eggplants. All of these firsts go to our CSA members before it hits the Reasturants and markets. This week we will also have purple dragon carrots

Elk Update. We did get a little walk through visit this week but not much damage. The coyote urine must be working out. I went around and talked to all of my neighbors and I think we have a community harassment policy now to suggest that this is not the best place for them to graze.

Fruit Update - We are getting close to the bringing of the fruit shares. 2 more weeks and the fruit will begin to flow. As you may have heard, a devastating spring freeze really hammered the western slope. All fruit growers were impacted. Since we support the fruit growers with our CSA purchase of their fruit, we get fruit before it goes to other markets. This is a good year to be in a fruit CSA. We will be starting with peaches. I so look forward to Colorado Fruit

Add ons - This week we have our Fresh Milled Flour, Past, honey, fair farm eggs and Nurse Nikki's Calndu-love balm. Don't forget our beautiful flower bunches that you can order to brighten up your home. Lastly, we will have bags of squash blossoms available to add on to your share.

Have great week.

Michael
