Week 14: Snow/Freeze Next Week? Oh Colorado!

Posted on September 4th, 2020 by Michael Moss

Happy Labor Day. All of us at the farm wish you a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Holidays between March to October don't really apply to farmers. Especially when we are looking directly in the face of a historic cold snap. The weather forecast holds a high likelihood of an early freeze - maybe even snow! Temperatures that cold spell the end of most of our summer crops. So our Labor day weekend will be spent laboring in the fields, harvesting like mad.

Luckily for you and I, the Kilt Farm team is stepping up with limited bribing needed. We will harvest thousands of pounds of winter squash, hundreds of pounds of peppers, tomatoes, melons, and actually, anything that is going to struggle or die from the impending 60 degree temperature swing. Oh Colorado. Oh 2020. You are crazy.

While these cold temperatures are throwing a wrench in the plans, we have a ton of food coming out of the fields and you going to love all of the fall flavors over the next seven weeks. Yes, that's right. Just seven week's left of this CSA season.

Preserving Time - We are at peak preserving season. We have flats of tomatoes, and bags of our various peppers available for you to add to your share. Cayla has been busy in the evenings making sun-dried tomatoes, sliced and diced peppers (just throw them straight in the freezer), sweet chili jam and basil cubes. I am so busy in the Summer that I don't have the opportunity to cook with my food. Come fall and winter, I so cherish the items that are preserved. Please get involved the bounty so you can eat the best foods all winter long.

Fruit Share - This has been a super challenging year for our Colorado fruit growers. I feel totally blessed that we offered our fruit CSA this year. While the peaches are ending, the apples and pears will be abundant through the fall. Ela Family Farms is committed to provide the full value of your Fruit CSA. What this means is that we will see fresh fruit along with some of their amazing ciders and preserves. This week fruit share members will receive Apples and Pears.

Dang Cold Weather - So next week we will see cold temps and rain on Tuesday evening. We will have both farm pick-ups sites in operation. Please help us from freezing out by getting to the pick ups as early as possible. Wednesday looks much nicer after the snow melts and the temps warm up. Our outdoor pick up locations will be at the mercy of the weather. Please plan accordingly. If you would like to change your pick up site for the week, you can do so from your Harvie profile between now and Sunday night.

Stay cool and safe this weekend,

Michael
