Yay, the heat has broken and we just had one heck of a thunderstorm come through the farm. We even had a little bit of hail, just to keep us on our toes. It finally feels like a more normal June. In 2018 a hail storm came through our Niwot farm that took out our entire crop along with almost every roof in the area. Now that was a humbling experience.
This has been an amazing year in many ways, from the challenges and learning opportunities to new ground, winning grants and the ability to now hug friends. As we have made adaptations to address the challenges of wet and heat we have always been focused on providing value to our members. Over the past few weeks we have been hustling to ensure that there will be enough food for everyone's CSA boxes. We have planted all of our peppers, eggplants, tomatoes summer squash, cucumbers, watermelons, cantaloupes. Next, we will plant water squash and fall cauliflowers (yes, already).
Over the next few weeks we will see reduced varieties and value in your shares as we wait for the summer items to come into production. I am going to be getting really creative with my kale and salad recipes. While the spring veggies normally feel drawn out, this year may feel even more so as we adapt to the challenges that were rained down upon us months ago.
One exciting thing is that the intense heat on the Western Slope has moved the Colorado fruit season forward. We have been able to source some amazing organic bing cherries to add in your shares this week. These are coming from Fortuna Farms in Delta and our partner in fruit, The Fruit Stand. We are also going to have 1.6# bags of Bing Cherries that you can add as extras to your shares. Good luck not eating them all before you get home from your pick up.
For the members with fruit share, we are anticipating start the fruit share season earlier so we can catch as many of the apricots and peaches as possible. I will keep you posted. It is our goal to bring in as much fruit for all of our members to add into their shares. I am so looking forward to a juicy colorado peach.
I appreciate your support of our farm as we move through the season
