Week 5: Happy Independence Day

Posted on July 2nd, 2021 by Michael Moss

Happy nearly 4th of July. I hope that you and your family have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend. While us farmers aren't going to have a long weekend, we will be celebrating none the less.

The act of farming and growing food is deep statement of independence and interdependence at the same time. Farmers have the ability to chart a course forward through each year in order to grow food and provide for our community. At the same time we are completely at the mercy of mother nature. I am free to make decisions, changing plans and pivoting depending on natures whims. We are also completely interdependent on you, the eater.

Without our CSA members, grocery stores, and restaurants eagerly purchasing, cooking, and eating our food, we would not be able to participate in this profound dance of life called farming. Thank you for putting a large portion of your diet, and in turn, health, in our hands. We cherish the opportunity to feed you and your loved ones every week.

So, have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend. We will have yummy food for you next week.

This week we achieved a milestone for the farm.

The picture at the top of this email documents the cutting down of the fence between our Oxford farm and the Chandler Open Space property due west of us. We are now the very proud tenants on an additional 40 acres of Boulder County Open Space. While it may take us a few years before we are growing more veggies on this property, we are starting the process of improving the soil with cattle grazing this summer. In the future we are looking to expand our vegetable production and incorporate more animals into our field rotations. Who knows, maybe one day you will be able to order your meat from your favorite nutrient dense local farm!

Fruit and Add Ons

This week we are excited to be offering some amazing add-ons for you. This includes Riland Apricots, Perfection Apricots and Rainier Cherries. All of the fruit is coming from Fortuna Orchards in Delta, Colorado. This will most likely be the last week of Cherries as the season is short with limited organic fruit available.

The apricots are beautiful and will make for an amazing snack. Enjoy.

CalenduLove Healing Balm - Our CSA member and talendted herbalist, Nikki Dorn, has made a fresh round of this magical calendula healing balm from our Kilt Farm calendula. This is the perfect daily nourishment for dry Colorado skin.

Flour - This week we are highlighting the Rouge de Bordeaux flour from Freshly Milled Flour. This 19th century bread flour was the favorite of French bakers for generations. Breads from Rouge de Bordeaux have a rich, nutty flavor with exquisite aromas of cinnamon and baking spice.

Pasta - This weeks pasta is Conchiglie, a beautiful seashell pasta.

Flowers - The flowers from the Boulder Herb Company are really starting to pop after a slow start to the season. The bouquets are beautiful and a bright addition to your home.

Thanks again for being a member fo the farm. We appreciate you so much.

Eat well,

Michael, Cayla, Aiden and all of the farmers at Kilt Farm
