Week 18: The season ripens perfectly

Posted on October 1st, 2021 by Michael Moss

Hello from a beautiful fall farm. Look at us here at week 18 of our 20 week season.

For the past few weeks, we have been hosting groups of elementary students from Niwot and Longmont schools. They are learning about composting, recycling and reducing waste. These farm tours are an opportunity to learn about how we grow amazing food using compost and the ways we care for the environment. These tours are always inspiring for me as I watch kids getting their hands dirty. When an eight-year-old gets excited about a dill plant, somehow everything is right in the world.

Yep, fall is here. Colorado fall with it's cool crisp mornings and warm afternoons is just about perfect. We have been continuing to harvest the last of our summer crops which have become so sweet and delicious. Today we harvested the first of our leeks and Napa cabbage. The green cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are all starting to mature. I love fall produce and the hearty meals you can make for the cool evenings.

Over the next few weeks we are begining to clear our fields and prepare the soil for the 2022 season. It is so nice to see the full cycle of the season. At the beginning of the year, we start by amending and nourishing our soil and then begin coaxing amazing food from the earth. at this end of the season, we look again to nourish our soil so it may rest. Farming is quite a circular process that frequently takes my breath away with it's beauty.

I have made sure to increase the quantities of items available for your share this week. If you want to swap items and add items, please do so to your hearts extent.

Fruit Share - We are coming down to our final two weeks of Colorado fruit. I hope that you have enjoyed eating the best of colorado fruit. Aiden sure enjoyed his first pear! This week we are going to have a large bag of Honey Crisp apples and Danjou pears. We will have extra fruit available for purchase for preserving and for those that do not have a fruit share. There are also late season peaches available by the case.

Add ons - We are coming down to our final tomato and pepper harvests. I have added a lot of inventory on all of the summer crops, so please feel free to add on a little or a lot to your share. We also have full cases of Sauce Tomatoes that can be added to your shares.

Don't forget we still have 2021 honey, flower bunches, pasta, freshly milled flour, eggs and our own calendula skin balm.

While the days maybe getting shorter, we are making the most of it. Please honk as you drive by to help keep us motivated. Before you know it the fields will be resting as will your farmers.

With fall abundance,

Michael, Cayla, Aiden and all fo the Farmers at Kilt Farm.
