View from the Tractor
Phew, what a rollercoaster of a week! Moments of exhilaration mixed with utter disbelief.
Let's start with the thrilling achievements. We successfully harvested all of the garlic, carefully curing it in our Quonset hut. Alongside training our enthusiastic new staff, we managed to harvest, plant, and seed across the entire farm. Additionally, we got the irrigation system in Gunbarrel fully up and running, giving our soil-building cover crop a real fighting chance to thrive. However, just as I sat down to write this, a severe weather alert blared on my phone. Acting quickly, I gathered all the staff into the greenhouse and secured everything, including my trucks. In a matter of minutes, we experienced 4/10ths of an inch of rainfall and 10 minutes of hail. While I would typically inspect the crops after such a weather event, tonight, the weight of the season's ups and downs has taken a toll, and I'll wait for the ground to firm up before surveying the damage in the morning.
On a brighter note, I was elated to stroll around the farm today and witness many of our favorite summer crops making remarkable progress. From the artichokes, cherry tomatoes, and eggplants included in this week's shares to the abundant flowers and tiny fruits on all the peppers, hot and sweet alike, it truly feels like the farm season might be finding its balance. But then, of course, the phone alert interrupts my thoughts. It seems this is the reality of farming on the Front Range amid a climate emergency.
Thank you for your heartwarming words and smiles when you pick up your shares. We are all working tirelessly to ensure you receive the best possible food. Fulfilling this mission drives us each day.
Sincerely, Michael and all the farmers at Kilt Farm
Fruit Share
Fresh fruit galore, yum. I have been really enjoying the peaches, which will be in abundance, but this week we have a special treat. Green Gage Plums. It is impossible to overstate the uniqueness of this plum. Its intense sweetness and scarcity has made it the truffle of plums. Finding a perfectly ripe one is the Mecca for food connoisseurs. Oh boy, I am looking forward to these.
This week's fruit share will contain 2lbs of Greem Gage Plums and 3lbs of New Haven Peaches! The fruit share is not customizable, but you can still add on fruit as an extra to your share whether or not you are subscribed to the Fruit Share itself.
Here's what you need to know:
- If you signed up for a Fruit Share, we will be adding fruit directly into your share.
- Going on vacation or have plans to be out of town in the coming weeks? Please make sure you check your upcoming deliveries schedule to ensure your Fruit Shares are on the weeks you want fruit.
- If you do not have a fruit share, you can still add fruit to your order as an add-on.
Thank you so much for being a member of the farm. We can't do it with out you.
