Grateful Life Farm: We had a lovely celebration of Imbolc earlier this week, marking the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Although we are still spending a lot of time snuggled under quilts with the cats and reading by the fire, the days are getting longer and I'm seeing other signs of the coming spring. The hens layed their first egg of the year on January 17th and since then have been laying a few eggs, just enough for us to have some very welcome ham and egg breakfasts. We have also had some unfortunate visits from predators and sickness. This seems to be the time of year when predators come closer to the house and become more bold as their food sources diminish. We have lost two hens to what we believe is a northern harrier hawk. We also lost one of my favorite rabbit bucks, a friendly and sweet white furred guy with red eyes, to illness. I find it harder to keep the rabbits healthy without the wild black raspberry brambles, echinacea, and dandelion and plantain greens that I feed them during the growing season and I've been thinking about how I might dry and preserve some for next winter. We also said goodbye to our pigs and hauled them to the butcher on January 20th.
Winter CSA continues March 3 and 17. After that, we move to our Spring CSA for five deliveries over 10 weeks. Then we're back to weekly deliveries for the summer!
Here's a lovely pea shoot and shiitake stir fry recipe to try. I would leave out the corn and add another veggie like red pepper or broccoli, but that's my personal preference. I usually throw pea shoots into any stir fry or ramen at the end of cooking.
