CSA Week 7 July 21-22

Posted on July 15th, 2021 by Amy Philson

New items this week:

  • green beans
  • sweet corn (sold in quantity of 1 ear so you can order the perfect number for your family)
  • white potatoes
  • candy onions
  • rhubarb

We have limited quantity of some items, so check back throughout the weekend to see if anyone swapped an item out of their share.

This is also the second week of blueberry season.

I don't have much news to share this week from our farmers.  They are all busy working in their fields...harvesting, cultivating, planting fall crops, caring for animals, etc.  The rain lately has been so welcome.

Recipes

Do you need some fresh inspiration for your zucchini and summer squash?  Try Grilled Marinated Zucchini and Summer Squash.

A CSA member shared this fabulous recipe for Curried Pork Burgers.  It's a simple but flavorful burger.  You can get ground pork from both Hazy Hollow Farm and Mickley Farm.

There are generally two opinions about beets: some people love their sweet earthy flavor, while others think they taste like dirt.  I'm part of the "love beets" camp.  Did you know that when beets grow, their shoulders usually pop up above the soil?  You might see beets from Humble Bee & Tree Farm or Detweiler Farm in your share this week.  Here's a recipe shared by Autumn from Glacial Till Farm for Roasted Beet and Kale Salad.

Autumn also shared this recipe for Garam Masala Carrots:  Trim carrots lengthwise.  Combine olive oil, honey, garam masala, sat & pepper and minced garlic.  Toss carrots with sauce.  Bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes, flip and bake another 10 minutes.

Share customization period ends Sunday at 10 p.m., so you have all weekend to change things up and add more items to your order.  I usually meal plan for the week on Sunday, so I will often customize my share on Friday to reserve items that we love, and then make more adjustments on Sunday afternoon after I know what we will be eating that week.

Did you know that NWPA Growers has a Pinterest page with tons of recipes?  If you need some new inspiration, head on over there and look around.

Have a great weekend, and don't let those fresh veggies languish in your refrigerator.  Get creative in the kitchen and enjoy the fruits of our labor.

On behalf of your NWPA Growers farmers,

Amy Philson
