I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving, filled with good food and loving family and friends. Please read this email through for further info about your share (or as a reminder to continuing members).
Share Customization: This email tells you what is planned for your CSA Share this week. For Winter CSA, you may see more variety in your share, including meat, baked goods, etc. Remember that you can further customize your share to your liking each week. You can make swaps and add additional items to your share by clicking the link in this email. Here is a help document that explains all about swaps and extras: How to Customize your Share. The customization period will close on Sunday at 11 p.m.
Preferences: If you haven't set preferences yet, please do so here. It's what Harvie uses to create your customized share. If you hate beets or cabbage, you don't ever have to see them in your share if you have your preferences set. Returning members should update your preferences since we are always adding new items. Here is a document explaining how preferences work.
CSA Share Pickup: When you pick up your CSA Share at the location you chose, please locate the box with your name on it. Take the packing list out of the sleeve and remove the plastic liner with your food. GENTLY fold the box, being careful not to rip the flaps. We reuse the boxes so you get more food for your money instead of paying for new boxes. If you have meat or cheese in your order, there will be a separate packing slip in on the outside of the box, and they will be in the cooler bag labeled with your name.
I will send an email early next week with details about your pickup location.
This week's features:
- Lots of fresh greens, including spinach and kale
- Red and golden potatoes
- Frost-sweetened carrots (limited quantities)
- Four different types of mushrooms
- Sweet potatoes and squash
- Baked goods this week include Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Orange Scones, and 7 Grain Bread
Farm News
Glacial Till Farm: Off-season work is underway and I’m very excited to get after these projects. First up is getting our plot ends redefined and set up so that we can keep growth from the living pathways creeping into bed space. 6x12 inch digout with thick wood chips. I will be able to run my irrigation main lines just under the chips so I can roll right over them with the BCS. Details are the key for a successful season.
Here is a pic of what Harmony Grove Farm's greenhouse looks like in the winter. They heat their greenhouse with wood to keep all of the tender greens safe from frost. The plants are continuously fed using a looped water system to control the amount of water for each plant. It's a clean system that uses 100% pure minerals and no harmful chemicals or pesticides. While the greens need to stay above freezing, growth stalls out with short days and lack of sunlight. It takes a lot of work to maintain fresh greens in the winter, so we hope you appreciate their deliciousness during these cold months!
Bushel and a Peck Farm is busy at Philson & Friends Artisanal Wares, our seasonal store at Grove City Premium Outlets. This is our fifth year of operation for the holidays, with the store filled with locally-made products from over 35 vendors. You can find our maple products there (or add them to your CSA share), but there are also hundreds of unique gifts, too. If you shop at the outlets, you can find us in Store 925 this year, just down from Eddie Bauer.
If you have questions, please don't hesitate to email me. Note that I will not be as readily available this weekend because I will be working at our farm's store for Black Friday. I will check email, just not as often as usual, so please be patient.
