Isn't spring a beautiful season? We have been dealing with A LOT of mud on our farms lately, but every year we marvel at the new life that is all around us in the spring. Maple boiling is finished for the year (a VERY short 2 weeks!). I already picked two daffodils that have bloomed (a few weeks early). All of the early veggie starts are coming up and growing like weeds with the longer days. The featured photo is of hakurei turnip seedlings that are already in the ground and flourishing at Glacial Till Farm. Although they are a somewhat cold-hardy veggie, they will be covered with row cover this weekend to protect them from freezing temps. Our first fresh field veggies will be in shares in mid- to late-April.
This week's features
- It's egg season! We always have an abundance of eggs in the spring. All of our eggs are currently on sale for $5.00/dozen, including Mickley Farm's organic eggs! Think deviled eggs, egg salad, egg drop soup, quiche, omelette, and more!
- Pork: Mickley Farm has updated pork inventory, including ribs and bacon.
- Chicken sale: Moose Farm has updated chicken inventory, and we have reduced the price of some packages.
- Beef sale: Moose Farm has updated beef inventory, and most packages have a lower price to make room for fresh inventory coming in a few weeks.
- Ham: Hazy Hollow's jumbo ham is still available at a drastically reduce price. Mickley Farm has a few smaller hams at regular price. Get your Easter ham before they're sold out!
Farm News
Spur Hollow Farm: Our greenhouse makes all of our farming possible! We just bought a larger 20' by 50' high tunnel that we will be building this week! That tunnel will be for cherry tomatoes and cucumbers in the summer, and we will put our egg laying chickens in there over the winter!
We had some bad news recently. Wholesome Fare Natural Foods in Hermitage is closing its doors in a couple of weeks. They have been our pickup location in Hermitage for many years, promoting our CSA to their customers every chance they get. This third-generation family business hasn't recovered from the shut-downs and change of buying patterns, so they are calling it quits. Their absence will leave a big hole in the natural food community in Mercer County. But we wish Jessica and her family all the best as they transition to their new normal. And we are thankful that another small business, Good Nature Essentials, has agreed to host our Hermitage pickup. Please support our local small businesses, especially the ones who provide a free pickup location for our CSA members as a service to their community. Even if you spend just $5 or $10 each time you pick up your share (or $20 or $50 once in a while), it can make a big difference for some small businesses.
Be sure to customize your share by Sunday night. And tell your friends about Summer CSA. We have lots of stuff planted to share with our communities!
