CSA Week 20 - October 19-20

Posted on October 13th, 2022 by Amy Philson

Can you believe that there are only five more weeks in this CSA season?  The fall season is speeding by...probably because I am so busy that I don't know if I'm coming or going.  I have been working on Winter CSA details, so look for info as soon as I can get it finalized.  I've been out of town four times since the first of September, which is very out of the ordinary for me, and now I'm spending much of my time getting my family's store set up (more about this below).  So Winter CSA has been put on the back burner for a little while.

Thank you all for your understanding the weeks I was away. It seems that the biggest packing issue was with eggs.  If you were missing any items in your shares the past few weeks, please email me and let me know.

Reminder:  This is the final week for the share customization period to end at 3 PM on Sunday.  After that we will return to 11 PM.

This Week's Features

Broccoli from Detweiler Farm:  Only 50 heads available, with 20 of those built into shares, so customize early before they are sold out.

Beets from Glacial Till Farm and Detweiler Farm

Greens from Harmony Grove Farm:  bibb lettuce, koji, shungiku, arugula, and more!

Lots of lettuce and lettuce mixes from Glacial Till Farm and Spur Hollow Farm

Farm News

Glacial Till Farm:  Interplanting strategies for cover crops that maintain vegetable crop production has been a big focus of mine. The systems and strategies involved are a mix of science, art, and experience. I continue to hone these processes to keep my soil thriving year round. This bed will make a fantastic deep rooted cover crop in early spring that will produce some seriously tasty carrots.

To keep fresh greens coming your way, some farmers spend a LOT of time covering their beds with row cover.  Glacial Till Farm covers sensitive crops to protect from bug damage and in the fall to protect from freezing temps.

Spur Hollow Farm:  In the featured pic at the top, first frost of the fall yesterday! Everything recovered well, just thought this was a beautiful picture. Thankful for the changing of the seasons, and the fresh fall and winter salad greens coming on!

Philsons Bushel & a Peck Farm:  We are busy getting our store Philson & Friends Artisanal Wares ready to open next Thursday.  The store, located at Grove City Premium Outlets, features locally-made products from small and home-based businesses.  Here is a pic of the store one week before opening.  By next Wednesday, the store will be almost entirely filled.  If you're looking for unique gifts, come see us!  We are in store 925 between Eddie Bauer and Under Armour and will be open through January 1.

Recipes

Beet, Olive and Kale Salad.  Absolutely delish if you love beets as much as I do.
