It started last Friday and by Saturday evening we had received 3 1/2 inches of rain!
The relief was immense and my heart sang with gratitude!
While it came down heavily at times, we didn't have any puddles on Sunday morning, nor did I saw run off. Whew. The soil just absorbed it all! All that mulching and not disturbing the soil really shone. And the crops! Wow. On Saturday morning, many already looked bigger -- including the tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli and more.
The July planting of fall crops is about to begin -- mid July is when we plant broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. This is often when the soil is driest and the heat most intense. It can be challenging to get these crops established. With all this rain, I think it will be far less stressful and less challenging than it was looking it would be.
And on Sunday, the bumble bees were out feasting on the flowers!
Coming next week to your shares ... broccoli, beets, and basil! In the meantime, if you've never tried kohlrabi, try it this week! They are sweet and crunchy. Simply peel and eat. Great snack for little kids. Way better than apples at this time of the year!
