Early July and the second planting season is starting! While there is the big spring rush of planting (all of May!) and there are crops that we plant continuously throughout the season (lettuce, bok choi, chicories, beets, herbs), July is when plant and seed for autumn! Lots of carrot beds will be prepared and seeded this week and next. Then we'll start on the cauliflower, broccoli and cabbages. This is often a very challenging task -- July is when we usually have the driest soil and hottest days. Fortunately, all the rain last week has improved the soil moisture, and there are wet and cool days forecast for this week.
In the meantime, we have been enjoyed grated kohlrabi and daikon radishes. I've used them as the basis for coleslaw and yesterday I tried them pickled, Mexican style with coriander and cumin. Delicious in taco!
