Are you finding that you are getting too much of one type of vegetable? Did you know that, besides swapping items, you can update your preferences? Yes! You can. Loved lettuce early, but would like a little less now, just adjust your preferences.
This week we have lots of cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, salad turnips, and snow peas, along with the regulars (lettuce, frisee, herbs) and some new additions (beets, baby leek). The cauliflower is a special variety. It's a type of cauliflower called green stem or sprouting cauliflower. You'll notice the green stems, especially when cooked. And the shape of the head is also different. Instead of being a dense head, hard to pull apart, it's more open and much easier to prepare for dipping or cooking. We love this variety because it grows well for us (cauliflower can be very tricky) and it's delicious!
And it's planting time! Mid-July is the time to plant lots of crops for fall. This week we are seeding lots of carrots and planting more broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, fennel and sugarloaf. More to come next week, plus radicchio, napa cabbage and more. Fortunately, we've had a few sprinkles of rain and there is some in the forecast for this week, which makes getting these crops established much easier.
