It's a rainy and cool start to the week -- as thunder rolls by and the rain drops pitter patter on the roof and porch. But, the forecast calls for a return to summer for most of the week! I hope you have a chance to enjoy it! We'll be harvesting potatoes, seeding cover crops, and gathering seed crops this week.
This is the best time of year for eating local and seasonal! The tomatoes continue and the autumn crops are coming in!
How are you enjoying tomatoes? Sandwiches? Salads? Soup? Salsa?
There will be a bit of a lettuce gap in coming weeks, but this will be a great opportunity to try some of our other beautiful, autumn greens. Frisee is a wonderful addition to salads -- mild and tender. Like a little spice? Try arugula and mizuna. Perhaps, some cooking greens? How about chard, komatsuma, and mustard? Take an Italian perspective and try the radicchio -- great in salads and all kinds of cooked dishes.
Looking for native perennials to add to your garden this autumn? Yes, autumn is a great time to plant. It gives the plants a chance to establish before winter, giving them a head start in spring. We'll be at the Owen Sound Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings in September and October with a selection of low-maintenance and beautiful native flowers to add to your yard. Come November, we'll be bringing fresh greenery (spruce, pine, cedar) for holiday decorating. Come say hi!
