Mulch

Posted on June 10th, 2020 by Danielle *Allen

The rye and vetch cover crop has grown taller than me, so our big project this week is to chop it up into mulch for our perennial asparagus patch. We mow it onto a trailer and spread it green to dry in the pathways. Then, once we're done with asparagus harvest in a few weeks, we'll rake it into the beds. By growing our own mulch we're keeping nutrients and organic matter on the farm and reducing our reliance on plastics for mulching. Asparagus is unique because it can poke through the straw mulch, but broad leaf weeds and grasses are smothered, so we won't have to weed again this year.
