Did you know? Our tomatoes are 100% solar powered! We don't use any propane to heat our hoop houses and the electric heat mats we use to warm the soil in early spring are powered by our solar panels!
As you can see, Garhett is giddy about these ripening cherry tomatoes. He sneaks into the hoop houses and snacks on them all day long- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We had not factored this into our pest management plan. We have screens on the houses to keep out tomato horn worms and we have vibrating super sonic devices to deter the voles, but this two legged 4-year old creature has opposable thumbs and just lets himself into the house to eat all of the tomatoes when we're not looking. Hopefully there will be enough left for your CSA shares this week! ;)
Tips and Tricks of the week:
- Keep your tomatoes on the counter. Though you might be tempted, don't put them in the fridge! Doing so actually changes their chemical composition causing them to lose flavor and aroma. Read more about the science here.
- Preserve them by dehydration, making sauces, purees, salsas and ketchup, or by freezing halved cherry tomatoes for soups and sauces later on
