Meet Brendan, wash/pack manager extraordinaire at Root 5 Farm! He's an organizational wiz, shifting from station to station to make sure the harvest is properly cleaned, stored and packed on time for shares each week (and usually singing or humming a tune as he goes!).
This week, you'll see an abundance of leafy bunched kales, crisp heads of lettuce, and hearty cabbages available for your boxes. The romaine is lush and the scallions are poppin' again, too, so a dish like this grilled chicken with charred-scallion chimichurri is a beautiful way to celebrate both. If you're looking for another reason to fire up your grill, this grilled cabbage slaw features a scallion-ranch dressing, elevating any of the summer classics. You'll also find that rhubarb and fennel are available, so perhaps trying out a new cocktail like this one is in order!
The plants out in the fields are thriving, and the weeds are no exception. We spent most of last week tending to the carrot, beet, onion and asparagus beds, but in true solstice fashion, we were able to do so in the warmth of the sun. The fruiting plants, too, noticed the extra warmth and are so, so close to showing off their brilliant colors. The harvests of plump cherry tomatoes and bright sweet peppers are right around the corner
